what is mentoring?
“At their best, mentors nurture our souls. They shape our character. They call us to become complete men, whole men, and, by the grace of God, holy men.” —Howard and William Hendricks, Iron Sharpens Iron.
A more formal definition would be: “Mentoring is a relational process in which a mentor, who knows or has experienced something, transfers that something (resources of wisdom, information, experience, confidence, insight, relationships, status, etc.) to a mentoree, at an appropriate time and manner, so that it facilitates development or empowerment.”
Paul D. Stanley and J. Robert Clinton, Connecting: The Mentoring Relationship You Need to Succeed in Life (Colorado Springs: Navpress, 1992),40.
Let me allow a past mentee to share her experience:
Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.
I have known this verse since I was a teenager but have never really experienced the work it takes in sharpening (speaking the truth in love, not withholding) and the result that sharpening brings (being sharpened). It is a humbling experience to be on either end. Laurie did just that… speak the truth in love to me and it is hard to hear, but God used her to be able to tell me audibly what I needed to hear. The sharpened results are ever life-changing. I am so thankful for her continued help and support.
